Woods with character

The perfect foundation for precision craftsmanship

MM Fräsen: Woods for demanding projects (ash)

For high-quality milling work, it is not only the shape that matters, but above all the material. At Maaß & Miszler, when we mill wood, quality is paramount. We use a wide variety of hardwoods and softwoods, which differ significantly in terms of structure, colour, strength and machinability. Fundamentally, the choice of wood influences the overall effect of a project.

An overview of softwoods and hardwoods

Softwoods impress with their pleasant, natural appearance and, in most cases, a wonderful scent. Hardwoods, on the other hand, stand for robustness, elegance and an expressive, lively grain. Which type of wood is suitable for which project depends on the intended use, the load it will bear and the effect it creates in the room. We are happy to advise you on this, as this is precisely where the strength of material-conscious production lies: the wood is not merely processed, but understood and utilised in its own unique way. But which woods do we actually work with, and what sets them apart?

Softwoods: spruce, pine, larch and Swiss stone pine (Zirbe)

Overall, softwoods are characterised by their pleasant scent and their natural, warm appearance. We work with spruce, pine, larch and Swiss stone pine.
Spruce is very light, pale yellow to yellow-brown in colour, and is considered affordable and versatile. Spruce wood is relatively soft, elastic and strong, and is frequently used in joinery.
Pine is also light, usually yellowish to reddish-brown in colour, and is characterised by a higher proportion of knots and a more lively grain.
Larch displays yellowish to reddish-brown tones and has a more uniform grain. It is more stable than spruce and pine, though still less dense than most hardwoods. When untreated, it also has a pleasant scent.
Swiss stone pine, Zirbe in German, is a very special type of pine. It combines a similar colour palette as the pine with a particularly aromatic scent. It is soft, very light and particularly rich in essential oils.

Hardwoods: oak, beech, ash, maple, cherry and walnut

Hardwoods are hard and have a lively grain. They rightly give the impression of being high-quality and durable. We work with oak, beech, ash, maple, cherry and walnut.
Oak is one of the most dimensionally stable and particularly durable woods. From light leather-brown white oak to reddish-brown red oak – this wood is heavy, robust and, depending on the proportion of knots, features a very striking grain. No wonder that oak has been the classic choice across Europe for centuries for high-quality timber construction and furniture design.
Beech is reddish, hard and has a pleasantly simple appearance. The wood is affected by fluctuations in humidity, but is rightly also a classic among hardwoods and a guarantee of durability and strength.
Ash ranges from light yellowish to greyish-yellow, with a dark heartwood. The wood is very hard, durable and yet highly elastic. The grain is usually striking and lively.
Maple, on the other hand, is light yellowish to almost white, medium-hard and usually has a homogeneous, fine-grained structure. This gives maple wood a particularly simple, calm and clear appearance.
Cherry features reddish-brown to dark red tones and a rather homogeneous grain – much like the tree itself, it usually has a very elegant appearance.
Walnut complements our selection of hardwoods with a refined appearance. The very light sapwood and dark brown heartwood create a lively, high-quality effect. The wood is hard and reacts only slightly to fluctuations in humidity, making it particularly well-suited to demanding, high-quality workpieces.

Material expertise as the foundation of quality

At Maaß & Miszler milling, good manufacturing doesn’t stop at the technology. It is only the right wood that turns precise machining into a convincing result. We love working with the woods mentioned, but we also mill plastics and composite materials, finding the right material for every project.
